Fans of Chris Nolan’s Inception — of which there are many: Inception just crossed $800m at the worldwide box office — have been wondering when the film would be hitting DVD and Blu-ray ever since the film hit theaters, so it’s with great pleasure that we can report that the release date has just been announced. Not only that, but we’ve also learned what bonus feature will be attached to the disc. Curious? Read on for the details, my fellow film geeks…
Over $800m worth of tickets were sold for Inception this year, which means that Chris Nolan’s film had quite a few fans. And, according to the press release just distributed by Warner Bros., we’re all going to get another chance to pour over its every frame much sooner than we thought: Inception will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray just in time for the holidays, on December 7th. So, if those four trips to the theater weren’t enough for you to wrap your head around the film’s many mysteries, you’ll have the opportunity to wear the film out in the comfort of your own living room soon enough.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that the film’s going to include a director’s commentary from Nolan, something that film geeks everywhere were hoping for (he didn’t have one on The Dark Knight, either, but the commentary that came packaged with Insomnia was very good). Additionally, it seems that the Blu-ray is going to be stacked with many more bonus features than the standard DVD. This is good news for Blu-ray enthusiasts, but if you’re not already packing a Blu-ray player, it might finally be time to lay down the money (which, to be frank, you should’ve done awhile back: Blu-ray rocks). Here’s the full list of special features:
* Extraction Mode. Infiltrate the dreamscape of Inception – with this in-movie experience – to learn how Christopher Nolan, Leonardo DiCaprio and the rest of the cast and crew designed and achieved the movies signature moments. (Blu-ray only)
* Dreams: Cinema of the Subconscious. Taking some of the most fascinating and cutting-edge dream research to-date on lucid dreaming, top scientists make the case that the dream world is not an altered state of consciousness, but a fully functional parallel reality. (Blu-ray only)
* Inception: The Cobol Job. Now in full animation and motion, check out this comic prologue to see how Cobb, Arthur, and Nash came to be enlisted by Cobol Engineering and perform an extraction on Saito. (Blu-ray only)
* 5.1 Inception Soundtrack. Composer Hans Zimmer teams up once again with Director Christopher Nolan to create the soundtrack for Inception. Enjoy this feature in full 5.1 surround. (Blu-ray only)
* Conceptual Art Gallery. (Blu-ray only)
* Promotional Art Archive. (Blu-ray only)
* Trailers and TV Spots. (Blu-ray only)
* BD-Live – Project Somnacin: Confidential Files. Get access to the highly secure files that reveal the inception of the dream-share technology. (Blu-ray only)
* 4 Focus Points:
o The Inception of Inception. Christopher Nolan shapes his unusual concepts for Inception
o The Japanese Castle: The Dream is Collapsing. Creating and destroying the castle set
o Constructing Paradoxical Architecture. Designing the staircase to nowhere
o The Freight Train. Constructing the street-faring freight train
Whew. That’s a pretty thorough set of extras, no? Again, it’s unfortunate that Nolan didn’t include a commentary (some of the best commentaries that we’ve seen have arrived this year, like Matthew Vaughan’s Kick-Ass commentary, or Tom Six’s Human Centipede ramblings), but beggars can’t be choosers. It is nice to see that a featurette devoted entirely to the soundtrack is present, though. Does that mean that the whole soundtrack’s going to be playable directly from the disc? Certainly sounds that way.
